Originally this was a quarry for Sapporo Nanseki (soft stone) and in 1993 it was renewed as a park. Sitting on top of the stone cliffs it provides a wonderful view of the valley below. The long thin green space is full of surprises which cannot be imagined by those driving along the highway. Even the entrance to the park can be easily missed. Better pay attention to your navigator if you are driving. Coming from Sapporo it will be on your right side only a few hundred meters after driving over the highway overpass.
Our hearty group of six early morning walkers including the two co-leaders of this club and their spouses met Sally and Yasu in order to explore the grounds. Having lived in Makomanai only a couple of kilometers from this park, I could not believe I had never known what it was like. It is full of artistic surprises surrounded by what appear to be stone sculpted mountains and plenty of trees. The weather was ideal and we stopped to talk quite often. I definitely plan to get back there this summer when everything is in bloom and have a picnic. Photos will be added to the Gallery.
